The Endless Dream of Expansion

by Ankur Yadav

The Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (MPSEZ) lies in the Kutch region in Gujarat. Spread over a 100-square kilometre area, it is Gujarat's most significant privately operated multi-project SEZ [1]. However, the presence of several thermal power plants and mushrooming of salt industries provides a glimpse into the illusory modernism verging on dystopia -- which has led to an unprecedented increase in water and land pollution thereby affecting the local communities.

This ongoing work is an outcome of my short-term stay in Mundra. It questions the idea of development and the various parameters which it encompasses and excludes, by looking at issues pertaining to life, home, migration, and borders, among others. Employing performance as a mode of inquiry, the work draws attention towards the dilemma faced by the people, of whether to stay or get away from home before it gets occupied and destroyed.

Sunless, by Chris Marker [2]. Translated in Hindi.

Behemoth, 2016, by Zhao liang [3]. Translated in Hindi
